About Us
Welcome to John and Mildred Thoroughgood House!
Established in 2006, our mission is to support and empower individuals with developmental disabilities to thrive within their community through a person-centered approach.
We are located in the historic Thoroughgood Colony section of Virginia Beach, just minutes from the Town Center and the beautiful Chesapeake Bay.
We are handicap accessible and provide transportation to and from appointments and community outings. With the help of trained, supervised, support staff, we promote independence while offering support in the areas of ADLs and IADLs. We support the stabilization and enhancement of individual's mental and psychosocial wellbeing with a gentle touch.
This is more than a Home, it's a Safe Haven.
Safety

We are proud of our enhanced safety awareness and extremely low level of serious incidents. This is possible because of the attention given by our staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of each person who resides with us, which includes 24-hour supervision and care. We work as a team. The Power of Four
​
Our locations will have a maximum of four persons supported at a time. This makes daily processes and care better for the people supported. Our environment feels more family friendly, and not institutional.
Fun
​
We promote community outings and in-home activities from visits to the local zoo, parks, movie theaters and malls to barbecues on the Home's deck, games and crafts in our activity room. We invite family involvement with all activities.
